Work

Margie received her “Honorary PHD” in Product Development, Design, & Sourcing, from many years of working at three different L Brands divisions.  This experience & international perspective brings a lot of value to prospective clients.   Margie infuses all that she learned in the fashion business and delivers it to you.  Bringing a garment to delivery is very similar process to delivering visual communication that accomplishes your goals.  From introducing innovative concepts & working with creative designers in product development, to determining the right materials & composition of the product.  Also understanding the most effective methods of manufacturing & fabrication.   Margie is really the engine that powers the creative process and merges it with efficient costing and production methods that bring a value engineered solution to you.

Thoughts

After leaving L Brands, I never thought I’d have another career that would be just as challenging.  Allowing me to bring those experiences with creativity & product development to the table.   Starting American Sign Studio has certainly been just that.

My experience here had been just as eye opening when I moved from Montana to attend fashion school in Los Angeles at age 17.  I thought I knew everything about running a business after working for L brands.   You discover very quickly that you need to be an expert in areas that you may have not had much exposure to.  After acquiring a lot of new valuable skills, you start to understand you’re never done learning & you have to be much more responsive.  A lot of sign suppliers are order takers, we want to be so much more than that for you.  Consider your goals & what message do you want to deliver.  Let’s find out what you really want to do and use or expertise to deliver your message.

Work

Creativity is a lot like humor, anyone who has met Paul knows he’s full of it.  It may take many different forms.  Sometimes its subjective, so it means different things to different people, You know it when you see it, there’s different levels of it, sometimes there can be too much of it.  Paul has been in Sales, Design & Estimating in one form or another his entire career.  He’s been fortunate to learn very much from his previous employers and share that knowledge with the clientele at American Sign Studio.   Specifically, how a great culture along with processes & systems not only benefit your own organization but most importantly how it benefits your clients.

Thoughts

Two old friends of mine, who don’t know each other, gave me the same advice when I started here, “Surround yourself with good people that are a cultural fit that perform certain duties are better than you ever could.”  Both of them have had very successful businesses for a long time & I’ve lived by that mantra.  It can be really challenging to find people like that, we are doing that at American Sign Studio.

It’s important to have a culture at work that provides an environment conducive to learning along with personal & professional growth.  This benefits everyone.  Employees are productive, they enjoy coming to work, they’re reliable.  The benefit is especially for our clients.  Working with someone who’s happy at work, engaged and actively listening to what your goals and needs are almost always ensures better result for you.

I’ve never been the type of person to not fully engage. When you put your whole heart into something & love your entire career, it’s really rewarding to see the results.

JIM DAVISON, Director

Interests

Reading, Golf, History, Civil War History, Home Improvement Projects, All sports but especially Iowa Football, Hiking, Music, Family & Kids.

Work

Jim is a natural DIYer and problem solver – qualities he’s applied to sign-making and environmental design for nearly 30 years. He’s worked for start-ups to thriving sign companies, and even launched sign shops of his own, all with one constant – putting his clients’ needs first. Through his sign work, Jim has navigated any number of delicate situations for his clients, from inconspicuously installing signage within feet of famous golfers teeing off on national television to assembling signs atop a ladder guarded by 2 U.S. airmen packing M-16s. An online assessment labels Jim as a “visual mathematician” although a survey of those closest to him (aka his wife) and a quick look at his garage organization may dispute those findings. Regardless, working with Jim brings an eye for what’s possible, both creatively and practically for your space and budget.

Thoughts

If someone were to ask me what I like the most about my career I would say that it doesn’t feel like work. Sometimes, you get to play with stickers all day! Also, I would say I really enjoy the creativity. This means two things. First, coming up with the ideas. Second, producing & installing them. I must admit it can be really challenging at times on the production & installation side. Sometimes you have to figure out something you’ve never done before. When you’ve executed to that & deliver your client something that’s unique to the client, it’s really cool. Communicating their differentiators is just one way how we can bring a lot of value to our clients.
